Kadhalil Vizhunthen

Cast
Naghulan, Sunena
Music Vijay Anthony

Though love themes majorly deal with the phase of attraction and relationship between two young hearts and the familiar yet tiring battle through prejudice and family opposition, each is driven by a different daemon. Kadhalil Vizhunden deals with an intense love affair and also proceeds to discuss the hero's perspective towards the whole issue.

Sabha (Naghulan) has had a tough and troubled childhood. His experience in dealing with his drunkard father and all the torturous episodes with him make him feel alone and deprived of true love. Moreover, the rough life also causes a dent in his psyche and inculcates a feeling of insecurity and self-doubt. Propelled by these negative tendencies, sensitive Sabha thrives on daydreaming and pushes through life more on doubt than on certitude. An accomplished basket ball player, the frequent matches break him away from his habitual brooding and they are his only source of entertainment.

Exactly at this juncture, Meera (Sunena) enters his life like a whiff of fresh air. With her around, Sabha recognizes a positive energy and support. After an accident which lands him in the hospital for a few days stay, Sabha also gets to chance to witness Meera's humanitarian side. Prodded by the fascinating aspects of her personality, Sabha falls in love with Meera and hopes that she will fill up the void in his life.

Meanwhile, Meera too develops a liking towards Sabha. Except a nagging uncle (Hariraj) who is forever bent upon grabbing her massive assets, she too has no family connections to fall back on. Sabha's unassuming personality charms her. When both of them warm up to the affair, Sabha leaves town to play a crucial match and when he comes back, Meera is dead.

The news comes as a shock to the young man. Moreover, the mind-boggling speed at which things had taken place in his absence makes it impossible for him to assimilate its full magnitude. Dazed and driven by a maelstrom of confusion and loss, Sabha kidnaps his lover's dead body and preserves it in his abode. Subsequently, Inspector (Sampath) and Meera's uncle chase Sabha and threaten him to surrender. Unruffled by the commotion going around him, Sabha settles into a delusion that his lover is still alive and sets up a routine with the corpse. However, eventually he discovers the truth behind Meera's death. What is the truth? What does he decide to do further? How does he extract his revenge? Does Sabha get a chance to shake off his delusion? Kadhalil Vizhunden's climax reveals everything!

Kollywood audiences have seen so many movies with a psychosomatic twist. But debutante director Prasath has offered his film a touching angle. The film's dialogues and its sequences progress at a very realistic pace and wrap the audiences in its natural charm. Vijay Antony's music has already become a raging sensation among the country's youth. The 'Nakka Mukka' song is virtually on everyone's lips. Vijay Milton's camera adds a youthful touch to the film. Boys' hero Naghulan's involvement in Kadhalil Vizhunden is pretty much evident. The tremendous physical makeover is the first and foremost proof for it; From the chubby immature adolescent in Boys to a fit, handsome and sensible young man in Kadhalil Vizhunden, the fledgling hero makes a strong impression. Apparently, Naghulan has also made the transition felt in terms of his performance. Heroine Sunena too has matched her performance with that of Naghulan. Kadhalil Vizhunden is the maiden venture of Sun Pictures, a well-known broadcasting media conglomerate into the film production realm. Incidentally, their first step has also turned out to be a huge success.

Through its distinguishing story and treatment, Kadhalil Vizhunden has indeed sowed a fresh seed of inspiration in Kollywood.

Sakkarakatti

Cast
Shantanu Bhagyaraj, Ishita,vedhika

Review:

Sakkarakatti is the debut show for director Kalaprabhu, hero Shanthnoo Bhagyaraj as well as one of the heroines Ishitha Sharma. The film, a triangular love story progresses on a determined track and clear pace from the start and when it reaches the finish line, it leaves a fine impression on the audiences.

Yuvaraj (Shanthnoo) is a young guy in college. His cousin Reema (Vedika) stays with Yuvaraj's family. Being friends since childhood, everyday Yuvaraj and Reema commute to college together. Though society expects and assumes that Reema will be Yuvaraj's life partner someday, Yuvaraj is very clear about his relationship with Reema. He even manages to brush aside all his friends' curious questions as well as comments. For him, Reema is his dear cousin. However, sensitive Reema does not feel so. Yuva is her trustworthy friend and guide; the security and warmth in the friendship makes her look upon him as her fiancé. In fact, for her, Yuvaraj is the throbbing centre of her whole world. However she keeps her feelings to herself and continues to be friendly with Yuva.

Meanwhile, Yuva begins to like his new college-mate Deepali (Ishitha Sharma). Though Deepali too falls in love with the charming Yuva, she doubts his friendship with Reema. Also, carried away by friends' remarks, she believes that something of serious magnitude brews between Yuva and Reema. This doubt causes her to distance herself from Yuvaraj and prevents her from expressing her feelings for him. So, what happens next? Will Yuvaraj get through the maze of misunderstanding and win Deepali's heart? Will Deepali understand the true nature of the relationship between Yuva and Reema as well as Yuva's side in it? Will Reema be prudent to give up her one-side love? Watch Sakkarakatti to know!

Debutante director Kalaprabhu has completely relied on the simple yet intriguing storyline for the success of Sakkarakatti; his confidence has indeed won! Shanthnoo, son of writer/director K.Bhagyaraj has remained a very solid performer throughout the film. Representing a sophisticated young man in a metropolis, Shanthnoo's demeanour and attitude are cool. His facial expressions and body language are so established that he does not look like a debut hero. We must admit that the young performer is a proud recipient of the creative genes from both his star parents and sister. Vedika and newcomer Ishitha Sharma too have done competently well.

Above all, A.R.Rahman's music is Sakkarakatti's highlight. The endearing picturisation of these songs add to the amusement. In fact, next to Shankar, Kalaprabhu seems to be the creator who looks forward to adding an appealing touch to the song sequences. The sets, the backdrop as well as the artists' costumes and colour coordination between them indeed present a visual treat. 'Taxi Taxi', the most popular and youthful number has been shot twice; 'Marudani' 'I miss you da' are the other lovely tunes in the film.

Cinematographers Andrew and Raaza Madhi require a special credit for the success and reach of the songs. Also, the whole film has been presented in an appropriate and impressive angle. It emphasises the theme as well as the significance of the characters in it.

Sakkarakatti is a sweet and cheerful romantic entertainer.

Jeyam Kondaan

Cast
Vinay, Bhavana, Lekha Washington, Vivek, Santhanam, Nizhalgal Ravi, Cochin Haneefa

Review:

With chocolate-boy Vinay, Bhavana and Lekha Washington in the lead roles, at first glance Jayam Kondaan gives the impression of being a soft, romantic film. But in reality, the film goes well beyond that; having a fine blend of sentiment, romance, comedy and action, it is a thorough entertainer.

Responsible and highly-qualified, Arjun (Vinay) returns to India after a sojourn in London. His ambition is to start a construction company, providing local employment to deserving Indians. But a whirlwind of problems distract him from this dream. Whether he manages to overcome these problems and fulfil his goal constitutes the remaining plot of Jayam Kondaan.

Arjun's string of problems begins in his home. When he checks his deceased father's savings account to pool funds for his project, he is surprised to find just a meagre sum in the account; he also unearths a shocking truth. His father had another family comprising his wife and a daughter Brinda (Lekha Washington). Soon, coming to grips with the fact and taking it in his stride, Arjun travels to Madurai to inspect his father's property which he wishes to sell to raise funds for his dream project. He holds discussions with the tenant (who has been occupying the house for a very long time) to work out a deal with the old man and his beautiful daughter Poorani (Bhavana) to make them vacate the house. In the bargain, Arjun also has some romantic interludes with Poorani and a sweet romance blossoms between them.

Meanwhile, Arjun's half-sister Brinda (Lekha Washington) too tries to sell the same property, claiming equal rights of inheritance. Brinda, in a bid to go a step ahead of Arjun, contacts the local rowdy Guna (Kishore Kumar) and takes his help in driving Arjun out of house. However, Arjun takes the legal route; through legal means, he establishes his ownership. But the court verdict does not put an end to Arjun's problems; Guna, along with his thugs, appears for Brinda. What begins as a polite exchange of words develops into a fiery argument. In the tussle that follows, Arjun accidentally kills Guna's wife. Guna takes the loss seriously and chases Arjun with a vengeance to kill him.
Meanwhile, putting all the bad experiences behind him, Arjun compromises with Brinda and settles down with her in the same property. Though Arjun extends a pure brotherly love for her, Brinda is not the submissive kind to forget the past. She continues to detest him. Finally, both Arjun and Brinda find a way out of their embarrassing co-existence; Brinda decides to pursue her education in a foreign university and Arjun too, decides to go back to London. Poorani comes forward to finance Arjun's trip. Does the separation diffuse the animosity between Brinda and Arjun? Does Arjun's decision work out in his favour? Does he finally leave his half-sister Brinda to face her problems on her own? Does Poorani's love assuage all the hardship he has earned? Will Arjun remember Poorani's timely help and come back to make her his wife? How does he put an end to Guna's revenge? Watch Jayam Kondaan to know!

Director R. Kannan (Mani Ratnam's understudy) has done well in his debut. Playing within the commercial formula constraints, he has presented a strong storyline with an emotional undercurrent in Jayam Kondaan. Lekha's character is particularly penned with significance, almost equal to the hero's role. And that must have been quite a challenge for the actress to perform in her big screen debut. After the romantic caper Unnalae Unnalae, it is an adventure of sorts for hero Vinay too. However, the change does not stop with his looks. He has handled the character with suitable maturity and performed a balanced act, being the charming lover-boy, a caring brother and an ambitious person.
In fact, though the chemistry between Vinay and Bhavana is so charmingly evident, no extra emphasis is given to their romance (unlike usual potboilers). From a mutual understanding, their friendship develops into a beautiful romance and grows with each sequence in the film into a matured relationship. In the last sequence (when Vinay leaves for the airport and Bhavana asks him where to get a passport since she has to join him later), the emotion portrayed between the two perfectly projects the director's message. Vivek is Vinay's ally in the city and Santhanam is his aide in Madurai. Both their comedy tracks add to the entertainment value. Kishore Kumar's role as the villain resembles his character in Pollaadhavan. However, his performance in Jayam Kondaan is sure to earn plaudits.

Cameraman Balasubramaniem's colour combinations in the song sequences are appealing. 'Naan Varaindhu Vaitha Oviyam' with Yugabharathy's lyrics and Vidyasagar's music is a lovely song.

All in all, youthful entertainer Jayam Kondaan is another winning production from the Sathyajothi Films stable.

Raman Thediya Seethai

Cast
Cheran, Vimala Raman, Ramya Nambeesan, Manivannan, Pasupathi, Karthika

Raman Thediya Seethai is the sweet-and-sour experience of a nearly-perfect man who embarks on a pursuit to find a life-partner. Though his endeavour does not give him a totally pleasurable experience, he gets into interesting associations on his way. What are his experiences and interactions with the strangers (including prospective brides) he meets? Does he finally find a suitable bride?

Venugopal (Cheran) designs and sells wedding invitation cards from his shop. When we say he is 'nearly-perfect ', what is his imperfection? Let's digress and go into flashback mode.

As a young boy, Venu always wanted to fulfill his mother's wishes. When she had wanted him to be the top scorer in his school final exams, he pushed himself exceptionally hard, almost to the brink of a nervous breakdown. Consequently, young Venu had to undergo treatment at the mental health centre for a while. Though Venu became totally OK after treatment at the mental hospital, people around him still treated him as mentally unsteady. So is that the imperfection? No! The imperfection is - he is too honest and reveals his 'mental' episode and subsequent recovery to one and all!

When this gem of a man gets engaged to Ranjitha (Vimala Raman), in an attempt to be very truthful, he narrates this disturbing episode to her. However, immature Ranjitha does not accept it in the right spirit. She rejects him and cancels the marriage. A disappointed Venu eventually meets Vidhya (Ramya Nambeesan). Here, things progress to the point of fruition; but a day prior to the wedding, Vidhya elopes with her lover. When poor Venu is left in the lurch, Vidhya's father Manickavel (Manivannan) is touched by the young man's unassuming nature; he volunteers to stand by his side till Venu succeeds in finding a bride.

Next, Venu meets Nedumaran (Pasupathi), a visually challenged Radio Jockey, whose love for life lifts Venu's sagging spirits. Nedumaran's love story and his fairy-tale wedding with Tamizhisai (Kajala) amaze Venu completely. With renewed hopes, Venu travels to Nagercoil to meet Gayathri (Karthika). Venu's revelation of his past does not deter the cheerful Gayathri from the proposal; however, Venu is forced to change his mind when he learns about Gayathri's unfulfilled love affair with auto driver Kulla Sekar (Nitin Sathya). Accidentally, Venu also meets Vidhya during his stay in Nagercoil when she is on her way to the hospital to deliver her first child. Venu learns about her miserable life; when he offers to pay her bills, he meets Ranjitha at the hospital's reception counter.

With a genuine concern about Vidhya's well-being, Venu meets Inspector Senthamarai (Navya Nair) the final candidate on his list. An unexpected happening messes up their meeting and alters their first impressions about each other. An injured and frustrated Venu comes to Ranjitha's house to rest and recover from the disturbing episode. Mulling over his expereinces, he makes an important decision about his life at that juncture. What is that? Does he decide to support the struggling Vidhya? Does he marry Senthamarai or does Ranjitha appeal to him as the best choice? Does Venu finally find his mate? Raman Thediya Seethai spins an intriguing tale!

It is the third film for director Jagannath. Evidently, RTS stands out from his two earlier productions. Progressing at a very natural and realistic pace with no artifice in terms of characters or sequences, the film opens up all the old wounds and haunting failures in one's life, simultaneously providing a gentle and healing caress to tone them down. Cheran, who has won renown as the most natural performer, has breathed life and soul to the film. Pasupathi's performance as a visually challenged RJ is extraordinary. Both Pasupathi and Nitin Sathya offer positive energy to the lead character and move on. All the five heroines have done great jobs. The entreaty and ebullience which the five lovely ladies bring to the frames and the storyline is indeed remarkable.

Rajesh Yadav's camera has captured the essence of the theme as well as the best in each and every other character. Vidyasagar has given all sorts of tunes for this movie. The melodic tune 'Ippave Ippave' is the star attraction.

Kudos to Moser Baer and Global One studio, who have succeeded in bringing out a quality and wholesome family entertainer.

Saroja

Cast
S.P.B. Charan, Siva, Kajal Agarwal, Premji Gangai, Amaran, Vaibhav, Vega, Prakash Raj, Jayaram

Review:

It' s quite hard to classify the movie as an action thriller, in spite of the all the gripping moments in a rundown abandoned industrial estate, because the boys with their witticisms keep the laughter coming. Nevertheless, Saroja is an interesting adventure and a fun flick.

Ajay (Shiva) is a TV serial star engaged to Pooja (Kajal Aggarwal). Ganesh (Premji) is a happy-go-lucky guy who is forever falling in love. Rambabu (Vaibhav) is the heartbroken romeo, who sacrificed his love for Pooja for the sake of his friend Ajay. Jagapathybabu (Sharan), Rambab' s elder brother, is married and has a daughter. These four guys are friends and when they get together, it' s laughter all the way. Bags packed and booze in tow, the guys hit the road they have tickets to a cricket match taking place in Hyderabad.
The guys are enjoying the road trip but fate plays spoilsport; midway to Hyderabad, they are caught in a traffic hold up. It will be hours before the traffic will clear, and the boys decide they may as well get back to Chennai, so they all at least have a chance to catch the match on TV. But Ajay has a brilliant idea. He takes a detour a small, rugged path that barely qualifies as a road, calling it a shortcut to Hyderabad. By nightfall, the guys are lost and find themselves in the midst of a maze-like abandoned industrial estate.

Meanwhile, in Hyderabad, Saroja (Vega), a class Twelve student is kidnapped. Vishwanath (Prakashraj), her father, is trying to get her back from the kidnapper (Sampath), who has demanded a ransom of Rs. 20 crores. Helping him is his best friend, police officer Ravichandran (Jayaram).

How do the four heroes get entangled with Saroja' s kidnapping? How do they disentangle themselves from the trouble? That is the rest of the story.

On the acting front, all have played their parts well. The young troopers have carried off their roles in a convincing manner. The band of boys combine realism with humour and keep us entertained; Prakashraj and Jeyaram have proved beyond doubt why they are called veteran actors; Kajal is charming; Vega is endearing; and Nikitha is absolutely hot!

Another big highlight is Yuvanshankar Raja' s music. The background score and the songs throb with energy. Dosth Bada Dosth is a well-made song in terms of music as well as picturization.

Director Venkat Prabhu has done quite a commendable job once again. He has managed to make a movie that combines action with comedy, without diluting the seriousness of the plot. After a full-fledged fun movie such as Chennai 600028, Venkat Prabhu has notched up one that has quite a fair share of twists, turns and pulse-racing moments. Even so, the comic streak that made his directorial debut a runaway success is what keeps Saroja alive and entertaining

Poi Solla Poram Movie Review

Category: , By editor

While the whole film industry is progressing at a feverish pace, shuffling through romantic stories and mystery plots, Poi Solla Porom comes as a soothing whiff of fresh air. Through its realistic and situational comedy, the film makes a lasting impression and generates an feel-good mood on the audiences' psyche. Inpsired by the 2006 Hindi film Khosla ka Ghosla, some changes have been made from the original to suit local tastes and sentiments.

Sathyanathan (Nedumudi Venu) is a contented man. His family, comprising his sons Uppilinathan (Karthik), Viswanathan (Om) and wife Saradha (Lakshmi), is the rarest of rarities. All of them live together in harmony under one roof. Sathyanathan's personal fulfilment is of course the chief source of his pride and contentment. With his kith and kin close to him and enough money to see him through the rest of his life, everything is good, so good for him. Sathyanathan seems to be the master of his own destiny, or so he thinks, except that he has a desire to be fulfilled.

Though well-settled, Sathyanathan's only wish is to have a house of his own. With a firm view to get it done, smart Sathyanathan has also saved some money from his earnings and has purchased a plot of land for future construction.

Baby (Nasser) represents business cunning in its purest form. A realtor, Baby has ruthlessly cheated and doomed many families and individuals without any regard for ethics or their emotions. His movements and approach are so mean that he is loathed even by the experienced people with scruples involved in the realty business. He is known as a brutal businessman with a boundless ambition, whose only aims are bottom-line profit and increased influence for himself. Most of his buildings are built on many innocent people's tears, losses and ruins.

Eventually, Baby comes to know about Sathyanathan's property. Since the time he gathered this information, Baby's singular ambition is to grab it from the simpleton. Soon Sathyanathan falls for Baby's sugar-coated talks and before poor Sathyanathan realizes, it Baby transfers the title and ownership. When the family looks back at everything and realizes Baby's ruthless move, it is too late. The whole family is struck with the tragedy, the loss of their only immovable property. At that crucial juncture, Sathyanathan's sons come forward to solve the problem. Knowing that only trickery is the right tool to win over Baby, they hatch a plan.

As per the plan, they choose an abandoned piece of property in an attractive locality and publish the details in the local paper calling parties interested to bid for the same. Greedy Baby, who happens to view the ad, gets in touch with the owner. Going by their advice, Uppili's friend's father poses as the rich man whio owns the land and make Baby agree for the deal. What happens next? Does Baby fall for Uppili and Viswa's plans? Is the sale facilitated and do they get their money back? Does the tentative ownership get revealed? How do the Nathans manage to hide the details regarding the true ownership of the abandoned property? Does their precarious position get exposed? Do they teach a lesson to the wily ruthless unscrupulous realtor? Watch the laugh riot Poi Solla Porom to know!

Nasser, as the crafty realtor who gets cheated by rank amateurs thanks to his greed, is the top highlight of Poi Solla Porom. His character is etched well in his dialogue deliveries, body language and attitude. With all that delivered in the right degree, the influence he makes on the audiences is profound. Nedumudi Venu's mature acting adds to the drama. Karthik and Om's performances too are up to the mark. In fact, the artists' combined effort in delivering the dialogues, their sense of timing and the understanding that is established among all of them is the reason for the success of its theme and treatment.

Obviously, Vijay, the creative person behind the movie's screenplay, dialogues and direction, earns all the appreciation and applause. Sreekumar's music aptly suits the comedy theme. Gopisundar's background score escalates the effect of the comedy. Antony's crisp editing and Selvakumar's art are other aspects of highlight in the movie.

But above everything else, the convincingly laughable sequences are what make Poi Solla Porom a grand success. A very relevant need in the times we live today!
